LAGOS, Nigeria -- A spokesman for Italian oil company Eni SpA says that something has caused production at its Brass River oil field to be disrupted.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity as is company policy, said the disruption occurred Wednesday. He said he did not know what caused the disruption, but said that it affected about 12,000 barrels of production at the oil field.

The oil field sits in the Niger Delta, a region where pipelines often fall prey to militants upset about poverty and pollution in the region. No group immediately took responsibility for the disruption.

Militants in the troubled Niger Delta have attacked pipelines, kidnapped petroleum company employees and fought government troops since January 2006.
